LDN 588

LDN 588 is the lightning bolt like dark dark nebula in the top center of the image. There are many other dark nebulas in this image, but I am uncertain about their names. In addition there is a planetary nebula hiding in this image - Abell 47. Find it and you get a cookie.

Other notes: The session started out ok (some wind), turned nightmarish (very strong winds), but finally became a cake walk after 12:30am (no wind). Had I known that it was going to be that windy, I probably would have stayed home. For most of the night while my imaging setup was grabbing frames, I was cruising the Milky Way with my 90mm scope + 31mm Nagler eyepiece - I didn't swap to any other eyepiece that night, and it was as relaxing as it sounds.

Speaking of winds, I came up with a genius way of shielding my setup from the wind. Initially, I was just using my car as a wind block. This blocked winds coming out the North perfectly. However, later on in the night, the wind started to blow from the East, and my car was too close to the setup to simply reposition it. After considering all my options, I realized I could just open one of the car doors and use it as a partial shield. Johnathan Doylend would be very proud of my 'McMaster' solution.

I also _finally_ (I think, at least) solved a semi-issue with my imaging scope's shift in focus. The first couple of times I was out, I noticed that while focus would stay rock solid over the course of 20+ frames, it would shift the moment I slewed to a new target. Consulting other amateurs and even Televue, I changed the way I focus images. Rather than randomly play with focus until the image is focused, I made certain that the last focus correction would be against gravity. This seems to have done the trick.

Finally, I also think I _finally_ figured out how CCDStack wants me to normalize my data. We'll see if this works on all future stacks.
